I'm Still Here

I have survived the first few weeks of my new job. I have been on a roller coaster of emotions from the beginning. I am so glad that I have been given the opportunity to work with kids doing something I love. That being said, it has been heartbreaking to see the situations that some of the children are coming from. For some, school is not only a place to learn, but a sanctuary from home. Things as basic as learning the alphabet, or looking at a picture book has never been done. It is sad to think that some of the simple joys of childhood have been missed.

I had a meeting with my co-workers this morning and asked the principal how do you stay focused on the task at hand without getting bogged down by lack of parental involvement at home. She understood my frustrations and told me to focus on my circle of control. So true.

I love the excitement of the kids when they work on writing in their journals. The stories are so creative. I think it going to be a great year. I can't wait to see the progress.

  1. I can so relate -- I used to be a special education teacher in a very low SES neighborhood. It was heartbreaking to see their situations and to press on. I pray for strength for you!

  3. "My circle of control". I love it! And boy, do I know what you mean about some of the situations these kids come from. My heart breaks for them every time I substitute teach in a kindergarten classroom. And then I remember that the Lord has placed me in that room, on that day, for a reason and to give all the love I can that day and that it's "good enough". . .but it's still hard. Sometimes I take it home with me. Sounds like you are loving what you do. . .I went back through a couple of your previous posts and loved that you said "I get to" when referring to your job. Oh, if only *every* person could get up each morning and say "I get to go to work"! What a different society we would live in!!! I will enjoy following you through your year.

  4. I taught Pre-K for awhile, and I totally get where you're at. I love the principal's response. I'm glad it's going well so far.

  5. How precious that you have been put in a place to minister to those children. You may never know the difference you make to them, but you can bank on the fact that you will! Praying for God's blessings and love to fill and encourage you this week!
